The story

What if the cat told the story?

Illustration of the Afronauts narrator: a cat astronaut among planets and stars, framed by the repeated Afronauts wordmark.

The seed of Afronauts was planted when Emmanuel encountered the Zambian Afronauts story while working at Metropolitan Republic. What began as an inside joke stayed with him. Over time, its meaning changed: what mattered was the audacity to think that big.

That connected with a belief at the heart of EMPRSSNS: believe you're great before anyone else believes it.

Then came a question: what if the cat told the story?

From that question, we began building our own world. A cat astronaut became its narrator—curious enough to venture out, with another life left to try again. Mission logs, recovered artifacts and clothing became ways to carry that story forward.

Afronauts is our own creative story world. It is inspired by Zambia's 1960s space ambitions, not a retelling of them.
